The NSBacademy

Even when we started our work as a ship manager in 1986, we at REEDEREI NSB recognized that training, advanced and further education represent an important part of our corporate development and management. Continuous further education, retaining young professionals and succession management are keywords of our philosophy in the field of human resources. Employees at sea and on shore are trained to manage the investments our customers make in the best way possible and to preserve the value of the ships entrusted to us.

The NSBacademy was founded in 2007 with the aim of pursuing this goal in a sustainable and targeted way. It enables REEDEREI NSB to design its own curricula, to adapt it quickly and directly to meet its own requirements and to spread the message to the workforce.

For instance, training our young ship’s mechanics at the nautical training centers is enhanced by our own additional courses to consolidate good seamanship.

We have developed the 4th NWO (Navigational Watchkeeping Officer) Program resp. the 3rd Engineer Program to ensure a professional transition from studying to taking on own responsibility as an officer or engineer. This program enables young graduates from maritime universities to start their working life at sea.

Own Ship Handling-Simulator

Without a doubt the climax of our training activities is the modern Ship Handling-Simulator. In over two years of planning great importance was attached to a realistic bridge situation, own ships were modeled and maneuver data was evaluated. Subsequently, experienced Captains checked the result for the possibility of implementation in the training course: in the end there are ten of our own ships from our fleet which we can depict in the simulator as a cross section of the types of vessels belonging to REEDEREI NSB.

The bridge layout was developed together with our main outfitter SAM-Electronics and depicts a one to one bridge constellation which is found on majority of our ships.

Since commissioning in 2007, new scenarios for the simulator have continuously been developed. In so doing we are given overwhelming support from the fleet. Examples of difficult nautical situations are prepared on board and transmitted to the instructors at the academy, who then transfer them to training scenarios. Today over 100 additional scenarios can be trained in the simulator as well as the standard scenarios, for example entering various ports.

Learning on the Ship Handling-Simulator means teamwork, making decisions and subsequently depicting them and discussing them among expert colleagues. For example, all participants join in the decision-making process, learn to assess situations from different angles and in so doing enhance and extend their own competence portfolio.

In the process we have increasingly worked in groups with members of varying ranks. By doing so, we promote the know-how transfer and support the communication between our employees at sea. This is also a positive side effect of the work carried out at the NSBacademy, particularly against the background of the demographic change in our fleet.

Regular training courses improve communication with each other

As well as training with the Ship Handling-Simulator, the NSBacademy organizes seminars for using the internal software applications.

Another tool of knowledge management in the company refers to fleet meetings that bring together the ship’s commands with their contact persons on shore. In terms of content, current topics from the nautical and technical areas are taken up and prepared by our internal specialty departments, such as the Engine Operation Department (EOD) or Technical Operating Materials (TOM). Suppliers of the shipping company also support us by giving specialist lectures. This type of further training represents an important component of feedback culture and enables direct contact between all those involved in implementing the corporate goals.

Well placed to face the future

Each employee has to complete a further training course at the NSBacademy at least once a year. This will create uniform standards and each employee will be given the opportunity at regular intervals to exchange information with colleagues from sea and shore. It is also important, particularly in seafaring and especially with a service provider like REEDEREI NSB, to take all necessary steps together to fulfill new customer requirements and to put this into practice through directly exchanging information with each other.

After years of proactive further training work with simulation-supported and seminar-like further training courses, we can therefore proudly say today:

  • We learn from mistakes and convert these into continuous improvement
